Calaveras de Coronavirus

An exhibit focused on COVID-19 fatalities in the USA.

Calaveras de Coronavirus is a stationary installation art piece comprised of thousands of paper postcards depicting calaveras skulls, each representing 15 people in the USA who have lost their lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally this exhibit was created in conjunction with the 2020 Holyoke Community Ofrenda at the Baustein Building’s Readywipe Gallery space.

Upon entering the Calaveras de Coronavirus space one is presented with an enclosure in which cards display a masked calaveras skull with the words, “This skull represents 15 lives lost due to COVID-19 in the United States.” Fifteen painted clay calaveras skulls are also placed in the center of the space to represent the 15 individuals per card. We welcome people to walk around the interior of the enclosure to remember, mourn, and reflect.

Lead artist on this project is Jason Montgomery; Jen Wagner provided illustration art for the cards; and collaborators include Alex Woolner and Spencer Crockett.
